Buday conference and award ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cs\u00e1nyi Foundation, the Hungarian Association for Local History (HSZ), the Central Statistical Office (KSH) and the Hungarian Statistical Society (MST) announced a joint statistics competition to mark the 100th anniversary of the death of Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Buday, a statistician and university professor born in P\u00e9cs.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 competition proved, with record participation, that statistics is an inspiring and vibrant field of science for the younger generation as well. The aim of the initiative is to promote statistical thinking and awareness among young people and to draw attention to the role of statistics in everyday life.<\/p>\n<p>This year, nearly 80 entries were received, far exceeding previous years. The award ceremony took place on October 31, 2025, in the ceremonial hall of the Hungarian National Museum, as part of a conference hosted by the Hungarian National Association.<\/p>\n<p>This year, there were three categories: short story writer, presentation creator, and infographics.<br \/>\nIn the presentation and infographic categories, applicants could submit works related to settlement statistics, while in the short story category, the organizers were looking for works inspired by the history of statistics. Topics included population and demographic data, education and health statistics, and data analysis related to place of residence. The event featured scientific presentations, a presentation of the projects of supported students in P\u00e9cs, an award ceremony, and a wreath-laying ceremony at Buday&#8217;s grave.<\/p>\n<p>The conference was opened by Dr. habil. G\u00e1bor Zsigmond, Director General of the Hungarian National Museum, followed by B\u00e9la Debreczeni-Dropp\u00e1n, President of the Hungarian National Association, Dr. Mikl\u00f3s Radosz\u00e1v, Chief Operating Officer of the Cs\u00e1nyi Foundation, Bogl\u00e1rka Csicsely, Communications Director of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, and Bal\u00e1zs Horv\u00e1th, Secretary General of the MST, gave welcoming speeches.<\/p>\n<p>This was followed by presentations of statistical research on sustainability and environmental protection by the supporters of Group 3 from P\u00e9cs.<\/p>\n<p>After the presentation of the student projects, participants listened to three academic lectures:<\/p>\n<p>G\u00e1bor Demeter (senior research fellow at ELTE): &#8220;Peripheries in historical Hungary as reflected in statistical data (1720\u20131910)&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bal\u00e1zs Horv\u00e1th, (Secretary General of MST): &#8220;K\u00e1roly Keleti&#8217;s decade of struggles (1867\u20131876) \u2013 successes and failures at the beginning of official statistics in Hungary&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Viktor J\u00e1ger, (Head of Department at KSH): \u201cInnovation at the HCSO \u2013 experimental statistics and machine learning\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before lunch, the competition entries were presented and the results announced, with the winners receiving a Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Buday commemorative medal, a certificate of recognition and a gift package in recognition of their work.<\/p>\n<p>Results of the 3rd Buday competition:<\/p>\n<p>Short story writer:<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Levente T\u00f3th (ELTE) \u2013 Where have those days gone?<br \/>\nLili\u00e1na Remeczki (University of Miskolc) \u2013 Love engraved on a poster<br \/>\nR\u00e9ka Ad\u00e9l Kasoly (Pannon University) \u2013 At what price do we change the world?<\/p>\n<p>Special prize: Gerg\u0151 Fekete (\u00d3buda University) &#8211; The Lyricism of Numbers<\/p>\n<p>Presentation creator:<\/p>\n<p>Dorka Hanna Szab\u00f3 (Le\u0151wey Kl\u00e1ra High School, P\u00e9cs) &#8211; Small Numbers, Big Opportunities?<br \/>\nOliv\u00e9r Sashegyi (Szeged SZC K\u0151r\u00f6sy J\u00f3zsef Technical College of Economics\/Cs\u00e1nyi Foundation) &#8211; Population and demography in Szeged<br \/>\nMil\u00e1n Vajda (T\u00e1ncsics Mih\u00e1ly High School, Kaposv\u00e1r\/Cs\u00e1nyi Foundation) &#8211; More students, less attention?<\/p>\n<p>Special prize: Zora Tari (Mikep\u00e9rcsi Hunyadi J\u00e1nos Elementary School) &#8211; Mikep\u00e9rcs<\/p>\n<p>Infographics:<\/p>\n<p>L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Tam\u00e1s Kaposv\u00e1ri (University of Miskolc, Mikoviny S\u00e1muel Doctoral Program in Earth Sciences) &#8211; Number of passenger cars \u2013 public transportation<br \/>\nAnna Tak\u00e1cs (Corvinus) &#8211; Apartment prices in Budapest<br \/>\nZsombor Istv\u00e1n Bark\u00f3czy (BME\/Cs\u00e1nyi Foundation) &#8211; From socialism to the global economy in P\u00e9cs<\/p>\n<p>Special prize: Dorottya Tat\u00e1r (Corvinus) &#8211; Primary school education in Budapest<\/p>\n<p>In the afternoon, representatives of the organizations laid wreaths at the grave of Dr. L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Buday in the Fiumei Road Cemetery on the 100th anniversary of his death, thus paying tribute to the work of the statistician and writer, who set an example in combining science and local history.<\/p>\n<p>All in all, it was a meaningful and eventful day.
