New year, new hikes

New year, new hikes

The weather was seasonally cold, but the atmosphere was fittingly warm on Saturday during the Three Kings Hike—no doubt helped along by the delicious mulled wine and hot tea. Each year, the hike sets off from Kaposfüred in two loops toward Lake Deseda: a shorter five-kilometer route and a longer ten-kilometer one. During the pleasant walk, there is a great opportunity to work off the extra holiday pounds and to share the joyful experiences of the festive season.

This was already our third time taking part in the popular event, which can also rightly be described as charitable. The entry fee is a bar of chocolate, which the organizers deliver to children living in residential care homes. Along the route, local residents host hikers at ten warming stations, offering delicious lard spread sandwiches, mulled wine, or hot tea.

Our project this year is connected to the theme of responsibility: we are looking for opportunities in our surroundings where community building and the functioning of a community are particularly noteworthy. I consider the well-organized Three Kings Hike, which has been running successfully for several years, to be a perfect example of this. The event demonstrates that with a small contribution, participants can take part in a program that benefits the community, is advantageous for everyone involved, and ends with a significant added value.

We had a wonderful time, and I can confidently say that this was not only thanks to the soul-warming drinks. We wish everyone a happy 2026 and many meaningful community experiences like those that characterized this hike.
