Getting ready for Mothers’ Day

Getting ready for Mothers’ Day

After Easter, the next special day for us is the first Sunday in May, when we greet our Mothers with love. In preparation for this occasion, we gathered at the Szentes Community House on Saturday 15 and Saturday 22 April. After the mentoring session, art teacher Mária Beke introduced us to another craft technique, felting. She brought out coloured balls, water bowls, soap and styrofoam eggs. We were curious and eager to see what role the “egg” would play in the session after Easter. We soaked the soap in water, put the coloured wool on the eggs and squeezed and compacted them with wet hands. It was a lengthy task, we couldn’t imagine what the end result would be, but in the end we made Easter felt eggs covered in several colours and layers of water felting. After thoroughly mixing, soaping, rubbing and compressing the egg shapes by notching and cutting out the top with scissors, we got a Styrofoam egg used as a template for the design, and lifted it out of the felt shell to get a multi-petalled tulip. A stem and a flower centre were added to the flower shell, so that the Easter eggs were transformed into Mother’s Day flowers. Everyone worked with different coloured wool, so we had more and more beautiful tulips at the end of the day to give to our Mother in May.
