Maker’s Red Box- Global Warning Climate expedition around the world

Maker’s Red Box- Global Warning Climate expedition around the world

On Saturday 11 October, the Pécs 3 group became the crew of a research vessel. They embarked on a round-the-world expedition to learn about the causes of global warming and their interconnections. During the journey, they will research, measure, design, build and play different roles, and will encounter a variety of solutions and adaptation strategies that work well. Through good practices, the team aims to gain knowledge that they can pass on to others to create the foundations for sustainable living.

One of the children’s first tasks is to organise zero-emission transport in Chennai, India, and model it using carbon-neutral vehicles of their own design and 3D printed. In the Coral Triangle, they will create artificial coral cradles and study sustainable tourism, before travelling on to the Northwest Passage to observe the permafrost. They will also stop at the mouth of the Orinoco River to plant mangrove plantations, before finishing the adventure in Lagos by designing sustainable school buildings.

Throughout their mission, crew members play different roles as they research, assess, design and build. All the while, they search for smart solutions and discover workable strategies to adapt to a changing climate. This has a dual purpose. One is to experience the impact of our actions on the environment and find new, innovative ways to drive change. The other is to develop a range of personal, social and technical skills that no global citizen of the 21st century should be without, such as critical thinking, empathetic and effective communication, information discovery and verification, 3D design and printing, data visualisation, crisis management and teamwork.

The crew of the research vessel will share their experiences of the climate expedition on a weekly basis. The crew will be assisted by developer Péter Schlepp, Géza Tisza, EdTech Hungary’s Head of Professional Services, and mentors Andrea Bálint-Orsós, Luca Borsy and András Gál.

Photos of the expedition can be seen in the Gallery.

Experiences of sessions 1-2:

“Today we did a lot of interesting things and we liked them all. I think the best one was when we used the laser cutter because it looked very interesting as I hadn’t seen it before. I also liked when we designed the rooms that we printed with it, it was a really good experience. All in all, I really enjoyed the whole day and I hope the next 7 sessions will be as good.” Emma Stefán, Group 3, Pécs

“What I really liked about today’s programme was that it was interactive. My favourite part was the use of the laser cutting programme. It promises to be a very exciting series of activities and I am excited to see what adventures await us next weekend.” Enikő Miléna Szőke, Pécs Group 3

“Today was a very exciting day because we tried a new thing. My favourite was designing my own room.My other favourite was the meeting when we assigned who would play what role.” Zsanett Zsagár, Pécs, Group 3

“For me it was very exciting to be introduced to the virtual journey and it was nice to be free. I look forward to every weekend being super fun.” Lázár Fülöp, Group 3, Pécs

“I really liked today because I learned a lot of new things. For example, what causes climate change. We almost sailed around the world in our imagination. Then what I liked the most was when we made our own boat cabin!” Bálint Radics, Group 3, Pécs

“Today we started an 8-week project about a virtual journey around our planet, with climate change at the centre of the theme. As we are just at the beginning, we clarified what we are going to do and learned about the topic through interactive activities. For me, the most fun was working with a laser cutter, where we could design our own cabin on the imaginary ship, which we then received on a cardboard box. All in all, it was a very exciting and eventful day, I really enjoyed it and look forward to the sequel! ” Hanna Tóth, Pécs Group 3

“It was a flawless day. Great programme, good team, active interest. From here we have nothing to fear, there will be a solution to tackle climate change. Thanks to the instructors for the guidance, special thanks to Peter for the very inspiring guidance. It was good to think together.” Géza Tisza, Technical Director of EdTech Hungary

“The team is ready for the trip! I met interested young people with very good skills, who motivated me enough to learn more about the topic raised. It will be a pleasant and I am sure fruitful trip!” Péter Schlepp, developer
