A special Saturday

A special Saturday

We could get acquainted with lots of historical background of these two feasts that we have never heard about before during our studies. What is more, we listened to the presentation in English so our language knowledge improved and we learned lots of new words.

On the 10th November, Saturday we got an interesting experience. Dr. David S. Frey came to us from the United States, and gave a presentation about two famous American celebrations: he introduced Thanksgiving and Halloween in so many words that we listened with big interest. We could get acquainted with the historical background of these two feasts that we have never heard about before during our studies. What is more, we listened to the presentation in English so our language knowledge improved and we learned lots of new words.

The presentation was followed by teamwork. We collected those meals that we know from American people, than we discussed the results. David speaks in eight languages, including Hungarian, so we could ask him questions in our own language too. Everybody was amazed by his good pronunciations. He asked us to talk about the Foundation. After that we continued the conversation in English. Then, with Annamária Sas, who is one of the members of the Fulbright Scholarship Committee, we made Jack-o-lanterns exactly the same way as the American families when they prepare for Halloween.

Everybody could show his/her creativity here and really beautiful lamps were made. At the end of the day, Annamária surprised us. She baked a traditional Thanksgiving cake, which was unknown for us, becasue of the pumpkin it had an special taste. It was delicious! It was lovely to spend the day together with them, we could learn from the American life and food. We would like to say thank you to David and Annamária for this day! Vad Klementina Imola, Jászság 1
